Online Counselling

COVID 19 has increased the take up of online counselling. There are many ways to connect to therapy online (webcam, phone, email and text).

I use Zoom (webcam video) or over the phone. Both are free to use.

It puts you the client in control because you direct your counselling needs by selecting the method of communication you feel most comfortable with. You choose the time, the place and the pace of your counselling to suit your needs.

Webcam counselling (Via Zoom)

Zoom allows you to see your counsellor face-to-face from your device. Zoom offers an encrypted service which supports confidentiality. Being able to see your counsellor gives you the benefits you get from face-to- face counselling (like being non verbal communications signs like facial expressions) but also the convenience of online therapy.

Telephone counselling

I do my telephone counselling over Whatsapp or through Zoom without the video. An advantage of telephone counselling is that non-verbal communication can be carried in your tone of voice or the pace of speech which can be picked up by your counsellor.

Benefits of online counselling

  • Counselling therapy from your own home at a time that suits you

  • Confidentiality is protected through secure Secure inscription software

  • It offers anonymity, not being seen entering a Counselling practice

  • Access to counselling may be more immediate

  • Flexibility to choose the technology you feel is best for you: telephone or webcam

Things to consider

  • Are you comfortable using internet technology?

  • Would you prefer to see your counsellor face-to-face? If working via phone, there are no nonverbal cues or body language for you or the counsellor to read, this can lead to misunderstanding.

  • Do you feel your situation is too complex to discuss via the internet?

  • Do you have a device that you can use privately without interruption? Make sure you have a quiet space where you can't be heard by others. Some people use their car !

  • I encourage you to use headphones or earphones. This keeps the content of our sessions private, improves sound quality and also minimises distractions. I will be using headphones.

  • Give yourself some time after the session to process what you have been talking about before rejoining your family, working or making other calls.
